The Brief

The Swimming Teachers’ Association is an international award-winning charity that works as a national governing body for swimming and lifesaving. The STA internal development team required an external partner to assist with on-going efforts to modernise STA Online.

STA Online is STA’s platform which allows all customers of STA to interact with all services, which include:

  • Memberships
  • Viewing qualifications
  • Purchasing from the STA Swim-Shop
  • Completing online training and learning
  • Accessing training and development resources

Instead of fully-offloading the project to a third party, the STA team were looking for a team who could complement their own existing expertise and work within co-development principles, adhering to system specifications and solid development principles.

The STA team were also looking for assistance with breaking down their system changes and upgrades into manageable delivery increments.

This requirement became more important during the COVID-19 pandemic as the STA team were keen to keep costs under control while continuing to deliver against their organisational goals.

Our Process

Our initial work with the STA team focused on a thorough review of their current system architecture, alongside a comprehensive requirement gathering exercise to understand what they required from the platform moving forward.

This consultancy phase resulted in a clear development roadmap for depreciating legacy systems and modernising STA’s application stack, alongside a new API specification to support core functionality across multiple systems.

This roadmap was purposefully designed to keep the system operational, while also allowing for incremental improvements that would provide their users with more functionality and enhanced customer experience.

To assist in the delivery of the improvements in a commercially sensitive time, we agreed on a sprint-based delivery schedule that took into account the wider industry slowdown, while also ensuring that core operational systems remained stable.

The Results

Live Q4 2021

Our initial work on The STA Online platform will be live in Q4 2021. This first update will include new and improved back-end platform which connects core services and databases.

Instead of reconnecting to the legacy STA Online system, we are building a new Laravel application which connects required features to this new backend. This will ensure the entire platform has a secure and stable basis for future development.

Our work with the STA team is still on-going as we work through their roadmap and support with the discovery, design and development of new functionalities.

Alongside continuing to assist with the migration from legacy services, we’ve also provided the full range of services for the brand new STA Online platform. Our team has also been responsible for updating the STA, Swim Shop which we have supported with our front-end, design and eCommerce expertise.
